The craft
Know your embroidery
The handwork decides how a lehenga catches the light, how much it weighs and how long it takes to make.
Zardozi
Raised metallic thread work. The richest and heaviest finish, usually chosen for the wedding itself.
Gota patti
Gold ribbon appliqué from Rajasthan. Light and bright, which suits daytime mehndi.
Aari
Fine chain stitch made with a hooked needle. Good for detailed florals.
Mirror work
Small mirrors stitched into the cloth. They sparkle on the dance floor at a sangeet.
